Trainee Capstones & Presentations

Trainee Capstones

Trainees are required to complete a Capstone Project toward the end of their training experience. The Capstone reflects an area of study in which the trainee has had a particular interest. Following are a select sample of Capstones recently presented by UW PPC graduates.

Pulmonary Complications of Sickle Cell Disease

Pediatric Grand Rounds Presentation: Pulmonary Complications of Sickle Cell Disease
Presented by Kelly Cowan, MD, PPC Trainee

Developing a Pediatric Palliative Care and Hospice Program

The purpose of this leadership project was to assess current resources and utilize the literature to brainstorm methods for improving pediatric palliative care and hospice services. Tristan Prescher served on the Pediatric Palliative Care Working Group at AFCH. This organization met weekly to discuss patients that may qualify for either palliative care or hospice services. In addition, she was a part of the Pediatric Partnership for Palliative Care, involving both Agrace Hospice and AFCH. Through her work in these groups, they developed a process for setting up hospice services with patients and their families. The committee chose to utilize a modified version of Seattle Children’s Hospital’s “Decision Making Tool” as a means of communication and referral. The group also gained valuable information by interviewing providers, clients and families who have or continue to be involved in hospice services. In addition, Tristan’s role included the development of a follow-up evaluation for patients and families. This will allow the group to gain consistent feedback and ensure the best practice is consistently being utilized. These are very recent developments and will be tested in a pilot study with the next patient identified as hospice-eligible or appropriate. In addition to committee membership, Tristan also created a Facebook page entitled, Patients, Parents and Practitioners for Pediatric Hospice (P4H), to increase awareness and advocacy efforts.

Once developed, it is her hope that physicians and other professionals working with children with life-limiting conditions will appropriately refer clients to this service. This will allow children and families to receive specialized and effective treatment, thus improving their quality of life during an incredibly challenging time.

Diversity in MCH Training: A Peer Learning Collaborative

This power point presentation was created by Shanna Vander Galien, APSW, 2011 graduate of the long-term training program. According to the National Center for Cultural Competence, poor cross-cultural communication between health care providers and recipients has been linked to poorer health outcomes and less effective participation in health supporting behaviors. In addition, research also shows that diversity in the health professions has been associated with improved access, utilization and quality of care for diverse populations. This capstone presentation highlights Shanna’s participation in the Wisconsin Peer Learning Collaborative (WI PLC). The WI PLC provided a safe and structured environment to address the lack of diversity in our training programs, faculty and staff. Through the peer learning collaborative process we were able to expand our recruitment efforts and work with several key diversity entities at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. As a part of this process we received technical assistance and were able to collaborate and share ideas with other PLC groups from across the country.
