Emergency Readiness

Emergency Readiness

Definition
Emergency readiness is the process of advance planning for unexpected disasters that may be natural or man-made to improve outcomes. The planning can be on an individual/family, business, community, state, or federal level.

  • Know emergency and contact numbers for medical care and family members.
  • Know the address of your client and how to direct someone to your location.
  • Develop and know the details of the Emergency Readiness home care plans that are specific to the child and family. Include a realistic evacuation plan and meeting place outside of the home. For example, if the child is on the second floor, how can you safely evacuate the child?

  • Children with special health care needs are especially vulnerable in disasters and require an emergency readiness plan for the disasters that are most likely to occur.
  • Know the plan for a specific child and determine if it is current and if it can reasonably be followed.
  • Review the plan yearly and notify the local emergency medical services about the child and the plan.
